Defect Type, Pace and Classification Level Effects on Inspection Performance and Mental Load

This study examines the effect of different types of defect combinations (”V, X”, ”V, 8”, ”/, 8”), pacing (21s, 23s, 27s, and no pacing included), and classification levels (divided into three classification and four classification) on inspection performance and mental load. Fifteen participants were recruited for this experiment. The result shows that (1) the level of classification has a significant effect on the hit time. Type three is relatively higher than type four, (2) Defect combination has a significant impact on inspection time, accurate classification times and mental load, (3) The task pacing has a significant influence on detection time and mental load. Non-paced inspection is superior to any other pace, and the 27s pacing has a lower record on mental load and inspection time, but has less difference compared to the 21s and 23s; (4) A significant interaction effect was found between the defect combination together with paced condition on inspection time and accurate classification times. Under low defect condition recognition (”V, X”), a significant difference was found among different pacing conditions whereas under high recognition (”X, 8” and ”/, 8”), the non-pacing is significantly superior to any other pacing conditions. It was proved that under low defect condition recognition the set pacing condition has an impact on time performance. That is, the pacing design in practice should take product defect recognition into account.
