Effectiveness of a health care information platform for overwork risk assessment

Purpose: Physical and mental illnesses caused by high workload and work stress have become important issues that affect workplace safety for medical staff. In this study, we developed an information system to evaluate the risk of overwork for the early detection of employees and provide health management measures to establish a safe and healthy work environment. Methods: In this retrospective study, we assessed the overwork risk of the employees of our institution in 2016. To develop the overwork risk information evaluation system, multiple questionnaires on work overload were distributed, and the results of the questionnaires were analyzed. We conducted pretest and posttest analysis and recorded the questionnaire recovery rate, investigation time, and working hours of overworked employees, which were used as evaluation indicators. Results: After the improvement measures were implemented, the recovery rate of questionnaire increased from 42.7% to 67.5%; significant differences were observed in chi-squared test scores (P < 0.001). The investigation time was shortened from 6 months to 3 weeks, and the working hours of employees evaluated to be at overwork risk were reduced from 58 hours to 4 hours. Conclusion: Constructing an employee overwork information evaluation system for the early detection of employees with a high risk of overwork can enable a safe and healthy workplace for medical staff.
