光子學簡介

Introduction to Photonics

摘要


光電(Electro-Optics; E-O)與光電子(Opto-Electronics; O-E)雖各有其範圍,但却常重疊而導致混淆不清。爲排解這種局而,遂有人建議以光子學(Photonics)來綜合這兩種學門。本文並將現在所謂的光電系統作一分類,按光子學所列的學門排列起來,並對這些細分類的學科名詞作定義上的研討。最後建議以「光子科技」、「光子工業」等名詞來推廣現今的「光電科技」、「光電工業」內涵。

Electro-optics and opto-elcctronics each has its own proper definition, but usually, they are not considered as two clearly distinguishable terms in certain areas where they are both applicable. In addition, neither term is broad enough to cover the whole spectrum of the interrelations between optical and electrical phenomena. It is therefore suggested in this paper to replace either E-O or O-E by using ”Photonics”, where generality is terminologically required. A diagram like ”pedigree”, is given to illustrate how various areas and devices in the E-O & O-E fields are included in the term ”Photonics”. A set of definitions is also given to some of the terms in the ”photonics tree” to clarify their proper coverage. It is recommended in this paper that ”Photonics Technology” and ”Photonics Industry” will eventually replace terms such as ”Electro-Optics Technology” and ”Electro-Optics Industry” that are in common use today.
