N. Gist Gee (1876-1937) was an American biologist who had significantly influenced the development of modern biology in China. He worked for Dongwu University for nearly two decades and was regarded as the founder of its natural science education. Among all the foreign science teachers came to China at that time, he was the first who had a professor's title in his hometown. He built the first biology department in China in Dongwu University and also imported graduate education of this discipline into China. With his endeavor, the biological education in Dongwu was improved rapidly and a lot of the first generation biologists in China were from this university. In addition, he was highly esteemed for his great contribution to biological research and the construction of relevant institutions in China as well.
