Purposes: This research was to study the middle age and elderly cycling sport tourists': (1) demographic characteristics; (2) influences of demographics to serious leisure and flow; (3) relationship between serious leisure and flow. The findings could be considered by the promotion of health recreational activity and policy making of related government organizations. Methods: A total of 406 on-site and on-line valid samples through convenient sampling were used for questionnaire survey from April 13 to May 12, 2009; the 7 interview samples from 2 cycling groups served as the subjects for focus group interview on May 23 and June 1.The Results indicated that (1) The ratios of the male, northern Taiwanese citizen, college and advanced degree, married, and 40 to-49-year-old (70.7%) were higher. (2) Serious leisure: the 40 to-49-year-old's ”perseverance effort” dimension was higher than the group over- 60. (3) Flow: ”concentration & potential control” dimension of the 40 to-59-year-old and the single were higher than the group over 60. (4) Serious leisure was correlated with flow (r=.676, p<.05). (5) ”Self-realization & personal enrichment” dimension of serious leisure was correlated with ”concentration & potential control” of flow(r=.633). Conclusion: (1) Most of the middle age and elderly cycling tourists were male and has advanced degree. (2) Benefits of serious leisure and flow could be obtained for the middle age and elderly by cycling tourism, especially for the 40 to-49-year-old. (3) There was middle relationship between serious leisure and flow. Related organizations may promote cycling tourism for the middle age and elderly, so they can maintain the habit for the rest of their lives and obtain a high quality leisure life and health in the process.
