Blind People's Attendance of Recreational sports-taking Beep Baseball as a Example

Most people's main impression of people with visual impairment is that ”they are blind.” Law of special education and law of protection of individual with disabilities established in 1997 both define blindness explicitly. In Taiwan, visually impaired student is defined as people who, even after adaptation, has difficulty in visual recognition due to innate or acquired physical deficiency, or partial or total dysfunction in perceptual organ (ministry of education, 1999). In this study, 12 blind undergraduate or graduate college students of Taipei were taken as participants. The aim is to examine: (1) how blind people interact with each other during adapted physical education of beep baseball, (2) how they interact with assistants (volunteers), teacher, and instructor during beep baseball education, (3) how they interact with their families in everyday life after the beep baseball training. After a ten weeks curriculum of adapted physical education in beep baseball (PM2~5, every Saturday, 2008/7/7-9/8), data from observer, teacher, and digital video recorder (programmed with Zhou 2007 physical education and sports training observation system version 510) were collected, systematic codes inspected. Frequency distribution and percentage of different interaction types were calculated, triangulation test applied. During the beep ball education, 35% of the students’ total interaction with others are mediated by speech, 40% by body language, 45% by speech combined with body language. On the other hand, through qualitative interviews of the students' domestic life, it is found that their emotional state became more stable. These results show that blind people exhibit positive and emotionally stable responses during interaction with instructor, teacher, assistants, and each others during physical education of beep baseball.
