A commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit for the detection of antibodies against paratuberculosis in cattle was used to examine cattle serum samples collected in 1998-1999. The result indicted that the dairy herd positive rate was 50% (63/126) and the dairy cattle positive rate was 6.87% (132/1921). Total of 310 goat serum samples were tested both by the same ELISA kit and an agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID), the results obtained by the two tests was totally unrelated to each other (kappa=-0.08). The AGID test was used to examined antibodies against paratuberculosis in goat serum samples collected in 1998-1999. The results revealed a herd positive rate of 9.02% (11/122) and a goat positive rate of 1.98% (36/1815). All the goat serum samples were all showed a negative reaction when they were examined for the presence of the bluetongue disease antibody by AGID. Thus it is suggested that bluetongue disease may not present in goat population in Taiwan.
