Hydrogen is adsorbed on a Pt(110))-(1 x 2) surface at T = 170 K. Two peaks, the β1 state and the β2 state are found in temperature desorption spectroscopy (TDS). These two peaks correspond to the different adsorption sites of the substrate surface. The β1-state desorption is second-order kinetics while the β2 state desorption is first-order kinetics. The puzzle of the β2 state in the first-order desorption is discussed. The absorption of hydrogen in bulk is studied by the positive hydrogen ion impinging beneath the surface at room temperature with a kinetic energy of 1.8 keV. From the Arrhenius plot, we obtained the activation energy of desorption Ed = 24.3 kcal/mole, and the pre-exponential factor vi = 4.6 x 10^9/s. The best condition for cleaning the residual carbon on the Pt(110) surface by means of an oxidation reaction was tested.
