Picosecond acoustic wavepackets, which are generated in a metal film by femtosecond optical excitation, propagate in a crystalline substrate and are then injected into a polymer film. Such an experimental arrangement allows picosecond strain pulses with amplitude up to ~0.01 to be injected into the polymer at room temperature without destroying it.
