A Health Survey of the Freshmen of One College in Taichung City

摘要

In order to investigate the health status of young students and establish the basic health information for them, a health survey was performed at one college in Taichung city in September, 2000. Totally, 386 freshmen were examined. From them a total of 336 students aged from 19 to 39 were chosen for the cross-sectional study. The results of the study are noted as follows: the study subjects consisted of 158 males (47.0%) and 178 female (53.0%) with a mean age of 25.4±5.0, the mean body height was 165.5±7.9cm and the mean body weight was 60.6±12.2kg. We used body mass index (BMI) to evaluate the body status of the students. The mean BMI was 21.8±3.3kg/m2, 3.9% of them presented with obesity, 11.4% were overweight and 53.9% were normal. The mean systolic blood pressure was 125.4±16.8mmHg and the mean diastolic blood pressure was 81.1±11.1mmHg, 30.4% of them had hypertension. The mean cholesterol level was 176.1±33.4mg/dL with 3.9% had hypercholesterolemia (>240mg/dL). There were 10.7% that had SGPT higher than 40U/L. The positive rate of HBsAg and Anti-HBs were 12.2% and 68.5%, respectively. The negative rate of both HBsAg and Anti-HBs was 19.3%. There were 8.2% of males who had hemoglobin level below 14.0gm/dL and 10.7% of females who had it below 12.0gm/dL. The revalence of ancemia was 9.5 %. Males had higher age, BMI, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and SGPT level than did females (p<0.05). The results of our study indicated that many young students had risk factors of cardiovascular disease. To Prevent long-term risk of cardiovascular disease, appropriate intervention as health eduction and life style modification might be warranted.
