Epidemiology and Prevention of Fishbone Ingestion

摘要

Fishbone ingestion is a common problem in emergency service but is seldom studied. In this study we examined the epidemiology of fishbone ingestion and compared the condition between fishbone present group and fishbone absent group. The study was a hospital-based retrospective study on 207(71.1% of 291) subjects who visited the ER of a medical center with the chief complaint of fishbone ingestion. Questionnaire based on Haddon Matrix was conducted through telephone interview. The characteristics of human, vector(environment), agent(fish) were described. Logistic regression was used as the prediction of the presence of fishbone. Fishbone ingestion usually happened to people without special medical history (95.3%). Those fish generally have fishbone difficult to clean up. Inattention (30.6%), eating too fast (22.8%) and fish mixed with other food (25.2%) were frequently associated with the occurrence of fishbone ingestion. There were no statistical significances in the demography, the past medical history and the condition of fishbone ingestion including the species of fish, the way of cooking, the place of eating, and attention or not between fishbone present group and fishbone absent group (p>0.05). General population should pay attention when eating fish with fishbone difficultly to clean up. Paying attention to eat fish, avoiding eating fish mixed with other food, and eating slowly can reduce fishbone ingestion.
