The Impact of Foreign Branch Operations on Multinational Bank Performance: Evidence from the European Sovereign Debt Crisis

The relationship between existing foreign branch patterns and bank performance prior to and during the European Sovereign Debt Crisis is examined in this paper. Foreign branches offer both benefits and risks for multinational banks. Although these branches provided diversification benefits prior to the onset of the European sovereign debt crisis, they served as a conduit for negative shock transmission from sovereigns to host country banking sectors during this crisis.
