During the period of Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan, the Ministry of Railways of Taiwan Governor-General made an initiative to promote tourism and recreation activities in the island by making a full-pledged introduction on the tourism situation in the region, followed by publication of the "Taiwan Railway Travel Guide" magazine in the successive years, which mainly featured important tourism and recreation landscapes around the railway stations. Moreover, the travel guide used text reports and photo contents to provide (passengers) basic understanding to the readers about strange places or places in Taiwan they have never been to and to create a sense of local identity and emotional connections among them. From the Dutch rule era to the end of the Qing Dynasty, Tainan had always been the capital of Taiwan and had always embodied a profound history of Han culture. To understand how the Japanese colonial government shaped the local image of Tainan and created a sense of place for readers (passengers) through the "Taiwan Railway Travel Guide," this article mainly analyzed the photos on tourism and recreation landscapes around Tainan Station in the magazine based on the concept of "sense of place" that human geographers are concerned about.
