Long-term Taiwanese Residents in Hong Kong: Migration Trajectories and Adaptation

While migrants flocked to developed countries in the last century as a response to policies targeting middle class population in Asia, early immigrants are much less studied, and their impact is unknown to policy makers in sending and receiving countries. This study takes the example of early Taiwanese residents who landed in Hong Kong and have become permanent immigrants who had successfully adapted to the unfamiliar culture over the years. Using mixed method by conducting fieldwork to collect data using in-depth interviews, participant-observation and focus group meetings between 2013 and 2018, a nuanced understanding is obtained on their reasons for immigration, lived experiences in facing challenges in social and cultural adaptation, and their sense of home and belongings. Three major categories of immigrants are included in the sample: Taiwanese women married to Hong Kong men, highly skilled Taiwanese who were tertiary-educated and engaged in professional occupations or services, and those who lived in Hong Kong while conducting businesses in Mainland China. Over the decades, they have developed successful careers, made Hong Kong their home, and have contributed to the shaping of economic, social and cultural landscape of the host society. Helped by vibrant voluntary associations of Taiwanese residents in Hong Kong, learning to speak Cantonese well, and developed their friendship networks with local professionals, they have made Hong Kong their homes. Living in a mega city that evolved as the "Pearl of the Orient" in British Hong Kong days, the Taiwanese are part of the international capital of Chinese that Hong Kong is known for. Whatever happens to post-colonial Hong Kong, Taiwanese long-term residents will have a home to come back to.
