The Double Journey between the City and the Village: The Transforming Multi-selves of Urban Middle Class in Taiwanese Popular Films

In the work of Ashis Nandy, he suggests that there is a corresponding relationship between the popular film and "the multi-selves" of the urban middle class. Basing on his perspective, which is to see the popular film as the carrier for dialectics between the self and the disowned self, in this essay I discuss the transformation of those "selves" in the Taiwanese popular film in the past twenty-five years and the social and political implication embedded in. In this essay, I juxtapose two films, Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing (1983) and Cape No.7 (2008), in order to see the dialectics between "the double journey" -the journey back and forth the city and the village- and the transforming "selves." The two films share a lot of similarities that both of them had made incredible "miracles" at the box office, and at the same time, both are genres of melodrama which ambiguously located between that of a realist and a commercial one. Besides, the storylines are both predicated upon young people who dream of standing on the stages as a singing star, and in the end they both realize their dream. For my purpose, I'll use "the city" and "the village" in a loose sense to see the journey "from village to city" in Papa, Can You Hear Me Sing and the inverse journey "from city to village" in Cape No.7 after an interval of twenty-five years.
