Application of the Virtual Reality Experiential Learning to Chemotherapy Drug Leakage Accidents Protection Course for Nursing Training

It is an important skill in the professional training of nursing in developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills when facing clinical emergencies. The risk of the exposure to chemotherapy drugs for nurses are at a greater level as they take care of patients undergoing chemotherapy. Hence, only by understanding the self-protection procedures when chemotherapy drug leakage accidents occur, and taking secure actions to deal with chemotherapy drugs can prevent them from exposing the contamination in the workplace. The professional training courses for nurses are all taught in traditional classroom lecture, with this education method, learners are more passive and cannot immerse themselves in the contexts. Teachers are unable to perceive the extent of learners' knowledge acquisition, and there is no opportunity for learners to experience the coping strategies when accidents actually take place. In order to tackle this issue, the current study integrated the VR technology and the concept of experiential learning, and hence proposed an experiential learning-based virtual reality model. A quasi-experimental study was carried out to verify the effectiveness of this approach in nursing training. This study explores the influences of nurses' learning attitudes, problem-solving tendency, and critical thinking awareness, and in comparison to the traditional chemotherapy drug leakage accidents protection course. The findings showed that employing the experiential learning-based virtual reality aid can significantly enhance nurses' learning attitudes, develop problem-solving tendency, as well as critical thinking awareness.
