Exploring the course achievement of mental health first aid programme for Macao nursing students

The objective of this descriptive study was to explore the course achievement level of "Mental Health First Aid" programme from the view of nursing students. Seventeen Macao nursing students participated and completed 12 hours of "Mental Health First Aid" training. An individual in-depth, semi-structured were interview was performed with each participant. Data collected from the interviews were then analyzed by applying the Miles and Huberman (2014) framework. The participants agreed that the course content of "Mental Health First Aid" programme was practical and the teaching method was flexible. It helped to improve their mental health knowledge, enhanced their identification of mental health problems, and provided them to seek for further assistance, as well as improved their attitude in caring for patients. This study demonstrated that the undergraduate nursing education in Macao put more emphasis on increasing local nursing students' mental health knowledge. It is recommended that the "Mental Health First Aid" programme to be included as a supplementary training or a non-credit course to improve the ability of nursing students in the identification of mental health problems, and in the provision of assistance to patients and their family members.
