Introduction: Fluid resuscitation is essential in hypovolemic shock. However, there remains debating about efficiencies between the peripheral and the central venous lines. Study with fluid mechanics consideration was therefore undertaken. Material & Method: the major lumen (16G) of central venous catheter was tested against 16-gauged peripheral angiocatheters in an infusion module with clinical and hydrodynamic considerations. Flow velocity was tested in crystalloid, colloid and red blood cells under gravity and pressurization. Results were compared with t-test and a P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Pressure differences were then measured to determine pressure loss in different components of the infusion system. Result : Although internal diameters are the same, peripheral venous lines provided higher flows than central venous lines in all these fluids (p < 0.001). Catheters contributed the major pressure loss in the infusion system, especially the central venous catheter. Conclusion : The peripheral venous line should be tried first in fluid resuscitation because of higher efficiency.
