This study examined the political intervention in sports between Taipei and Kaohsiung counties through the bidding for the 2001 World Baseball Cup. The sports policy is regarded as a party political issue at the local government level in the context of the central-local government changes. This study finds that the Taipei City government and KMT interests were able to appeal to international regulations, thereby legitimating their claims as well as drawing on the strengths of the International Baseball Association (IBA) which lay beyond Taiwan sporting and political constituency.
