The purpose of this study was to explore the living experience and attitudes of the early pregnant women who received assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs), using the phenomenological methodology. From March 2003 to May 2003, data were obtained by administering an in-depth interview to women impregnated using assisted reproductive techniques at the gestational age of 16-20 weeks at an infertility treatment center in central Taiwan. In total, 20 participants were interviewed. Our results showed these women’s living experience were: 1) accept one’s fate, 2) hard work brings success, and 3) achieving maternal tasks. To these women, “hard work” was tolerating the responsibility of giving birth, frustration at being infertile, psychophysiological exhaustion, gratification when confirmed pregnant, and lack of pregnant reality, Achieving maternal tasks included giving of oneself, support of families, and achieving a harmonious home atmosphere. The results of this study can help health care professionals understand the values of ARTs impregnated women and the meaning they give life and incorporate this information into a pertinent prenatal care model.
