Collaboration, Inclusion, and Dialogue: Development of Diversified Learning and Visiting Resources for the National Museum of Taiwan History's Permanent Tactile Exhibits

The National Museum of Taiwan History (hereinafter referred to as NMTH) re-opened on January 8, 2021, after 2 years of renovations. The revamped permanent exhibition creates a dialogue with the public and showcases Taiwan's history from a multicultural perspective. In order to provide visually impaired visitors with different sensory learning experiences, a special tactile exhibit has been built, and diversified learning and visiting resources have been developed to fulfill the museum's social responsibility to promote cultural equality. When museums assess the learning requirements of visually impaired visitors, the main challenge faced is how to develop their own knowledge and provide adequate services for the visually impaired and how to respond specifically to the needs of these visitors. Because of the wide range of professional disciplines involved in the demand for educational and visiting services for the visually impaired, this project invites experts from multiple fields, including special education experts, visually impaired persons, elderly volunteers, tour designers, and staff in the first line of service at the exhibition venues, to form a development team. With the cooperation of professionals from different disciplines, the project will review the needs of visually impaired visitors and develop "Diversified Learning and Visiting Resources for the Permanent Tactile Exhibit Area." It is expected that through these resources, visually impaired visitors can acquire knowledge, interact with society and others, and maintain their physical and mental health through positive energy, which is the key to optimizing educational visitation services. When the museum welcomes visitors from diverse communities, the collaboration and dialogue between experts from different professions allow for the development of limited knowledge and experience, thus creating a multi-modal and multi-sensory approach that enables various communities to experience Taiwan's history from a multicultural perspective and via a variety of senses.
