Reading, politics and writing: Understanding Ye Lingfeng after 1949 through his Diary

Ye Lingfeng became famous in Shanghai and lived in Hong Kong at the age of 33 in 1938 until his death. He experienced the most turbulent periods of Hong Kong in the twentieth century: the Japanese Occupation in the early 1940s, the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, and the "1967 Riot". Ye left two rather discordant impressions for us: a patriotic and anti-colonial nationalist, and a scholarly and gentle essayist. This paper uses the newly published The Diary of Ye Lingfeng to understand the three identities of Ye Lingfeng, namely, a scholar, a patriot, and a writer, and how he worked hard to negotiate among them. It is this kind of negotiation that gave birth to Ye's most groundbreaking series of essays on "Hong Kong Local Records", and also explained why he stayed in a job he didn't like for a long time. In the recent 20 to 30 years of Hong Kong literary research, "local consciousness" has become more and more important, and it may sometimes simplify the face of history. Revisiting Ye's life and writing can remind us that we should not underestimate the complexity of the relationship between collective and individual, politics and art in reality.
