Staying with the "Wasted Lives": Technological Rhapsody and Ecological Disaster in Chen Qiufan's "The Waste Tide"

This paper aims to investigate how humankind addresses the modern situation, particularly the ecological problems arising from the technological advancements brought by modernization. With the Chinese science fiction The Waste Tide (Chen Qiufan, 2013) as example, this paper discusses how the "wasted lives" make kin to the human by two ways: regeneration and coalition. The "wasted lives", such as e-wastes, plastics, and heavy metals transform into invisible matters, which endangered human health but reconnected with humankind. Also, the coalition between lower classes and the wastes can reverse its own disadvantages and destroy the central hegemony. By considering the new relationship between the humankind and the "wasted lives", this paper pay attention to the negative or doubtful consequences of technological progress, and to show consideration for the ecological issues of our planet as well.
