Hong Kong, The Lost City: the Politics of reality and the Archaeologies of the Future in the Science Fiction Collection Dark Fluid

This article takes the science fiction collection Dark Fluid (2017), compiled by the Hong Kong artist Angela Su (徐世琪), as the object of study. The writing project of this science fiction was triggered by the Umbrella Movement. The authors consciously took science fiction as a method to think about the future fate of Hong Kong. The imagination of future Hong Kong in the Dark Fluid was closely related to the real situation after the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997. The book, therefore, was an obvious example to show that the theme of "Hong Kong, the lost city" has extended from serious literature to science fiction. To focus on the imagination of time and space, the discussion included the following three parts: (1) the metaphors of the city and its social space. (2) "Young Hong Kong" and youth as a political subject. (3) The imagination of the sinking island, and the meanings of narrating/telling stories of the archaeologies of the future. The purpose of this paper is to explain how these authors used the form or the elements of science fiction to reflect the anxiety about losing the city and the collective memory of the Umbrella Movement, and consequently, to manifest the relationship between science-fiction writing and the politics of the reality, and the relationship between the literature and the social movements.
