The objective of this study is to develop a television foreign news writing and interpretation course based on the authentic tasks practiced by TV foreign news writing and interpretation professionals. More and more departments of foreign languages in colleges in Taiwan are offering conference interpretation courses, but there is little need for conference interpreters due to Taiwan's small conference interpretation market. On the other hand, the fact that at least two graduates from the department of applied foreign languages involved in this study are working as TV translators and interpreters who voiced the need to offer a TV news translation and interpretation course in the B.A. program, and that with over 10 TV news companies and numerous other TV stations in Taiwan that have foreign news departments, there is a significantly greater demand for foreign news writers and interpreters. This study uses qualitative methods to collect data and analyze them to complete the report. Participants are the instructor/researcher; a co-teacher (a professional TV news writer for over ten years who gave a six-hour seminar on TV foreign news translation/interpreting); and students in two interpretation classes in the department of applied foreign languages in a university in Taiwan. The training tasks and evaluation criteria derived from the pilot study. Students who complete this course are expected to become familiar with the skills and knowledge for performing TV news writing and interpreting. With further on the job training, they may become competent news translators/interpreters.
