Foreign language has become an indispensable tool for many people as a result of the universal higher education. The demand of job market for high level language talents is increasing. When prospective students are applying to the language programs of a university, they expect to learn more than mere languages. Considering the fact that competition among leading universities is highly intense in cultivating high-caliber graduates, foreign language universities as well as comprehensive universities with language programs are under great pressure of reform. As a response to the abovementioned challenges, all language programs of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) are exploring a new talent cultivation model. Accordingly, the Japanese Department of BFSU has recently launched its 2016 undergraduate program with 4 fresh initiatives: (1) to enroll students with different background through various channels;(2) to cultivate students at different levels; (3) to start mutual recognition of credits or grades between Chinese and overseas universities;(4) to encourage students to obtain dual degrees at a partner university both home and abroad. More specifically, we enroll not only students who have been recommended directly by their home high schools (usually the top high schools in major cities and provinces) and exempt of the college entrance examination, but also those who have passed college entrance examination with an outstanding performance and excellent English as well as overseas students with a good command of Chinese. To cultivate students at different levels, we will provide advanced interpretation or simultaneous interpretation classes for those who have a good command of Japanese and excellent spoken language capability, and we will provide joint undergraduate-postgraduate program for those who have a good foundation in language skills, comprehensive knowledge and a passion for research. For those who pursue dual degrees, we can re-arrange their class schedules so that they will be able to earn a degree at BFSU and a dual degree at other Chinese universities or overseas universities. We facilitate our students to study abroad through the mutual recognition of credits between Chinese and overseas universities. To encourage students to obtain a dual degree at a partner university, we will provide support for those who pursue 2+2 dual degree programs with overseas universities or dual degree programs with other domestic universities.
