台灣高等教育下「佛教教育」的挑戰與展望─以法鼓佛教學系為例

摘要


本文主要探討做為台灣高等教育體制下「佛教教育」的教育目標,其發展趨勢與特色、挑戰以及未來展望。從世界佛學學術史的角度來看,現代高等教育體制下的「佛教學」的開展始於十九世紀的歐州與北美州的大學,從而也影響了接下來二十世紀在亞洲的現代大學開始發展的「佛教學」。影響的面向包括研究方法、研究課題以及學術意識形態。尤其明顯的是,歐美早期的「佛教學」延續啟蒙運動的科學理性精神,強調客觀的實證主義,以嚴謹的文獻學以及義理研究為主的學術研究樣態,在全球化的脈絡下,影響了佛教發源地與深具佛教傳統的亞洲地區的現代佛教教育。本文想探討的議題是:以學術為導向的西方佛教學,在承載佛教傳統的亞洲脈絡下產生什麼影響、變化以及挑戰,另一方面後者相對於西方的佛教學,又能有什麼特色、優勢、契機?在這個議題框架下,為了有更具體而聚焦的探討,本文將以法鼓「佛教學系」的教學沿革與現況以及契機與挑戰來思考未來華人佛教研究與教育未來發展的可能方向與機會。

The topic of this paper is an analysis of "Buddhist education" or "Buddhist Studies" in the context of Taiwan's Higher Education setting discussing its institutional nature, educational objectives, challenges and potentials. "Buddhist Studies" as an academic field of study was evolved in the West during the 19^(th) century. Since then, it helped to create Buddhist Studies in the East in which the religion largely weaves into the fabric of the belief system of the people. In particular, the 19^(th)-century European Buddhist Studies embedded the Enlightenment's scientific outlook, was characterized by positivist philology. Henceforth, the issues to be addressed in this paper concern with the impact, changes, and challenges by the Western academic scholarship on the Buddhist education in Taiwan, and, on the other hand, the advantages and potentials the latter could be expected to develop in the context of global Buddhist education. In order to carry out more focused and concrete discussions the analysis will mainly base on the case study of Buddhist Study Department of the Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts.
