The Feasibility, Ideas, Practices, and Suggestions of Implementing International Education Through English-Medium Instruction

透過全英語教學實現國際教育之合宜性、理念、實踐與建議

摘要

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility, ideas, practices, and suggestions of using English-medium instruction (EMI) to implement international education (IE). Through educational policy analysis, a literature review, and practitioner interviews on IE, the researchers have found that there are three rationales that support the feasibility of EMI for IE-it conforms to multiple Taiwan government policies, it builds the core competency of IE, and it extends the effective aspects of IE. The study discusses three concepts related to EMI for IE: Multi-policy achievability, practical empowerment, and extensive effectiveness. The researchers also propose three practices of EMI for IE: a multi-policy integrated strategy, competence-oriented instruction, and an extensive pedagogy. The paper concludes with the following suggestions for policy makers and educators: using EMI as an efficient pedagogy for implementing IE, EMI equipping students with English competence for lifelong IE, EMI being a flexible pedagogy for IE, progressive reform as a better strategy, and some needed supporting measures.
