Effect of Cold Water Immersion on the Elimination of Fatigue Caused by Soccer Matches

Background: Soccer involves high-intensity confrontation and collision, as well as continuous repetition of the rapid strength movements of the stretch-shortening cycle. Soccer players often experience acute fatigue, physical impairment, and decreased sports performance after a match, and they often use cold water immersion (CWI) as a method of fatigue recovery after a soccer match or daily training. Although CWI is easy to perform and low in cost, its actual recovery effect on fatigue caused by soccer matches has not yet been investigated. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to conduct a comprehensive literature discussion and analysis of the aspects of the fatigue characteristics caused by soccer matches, the possible physiological benefits of CWI and the effect of CWI on eliminating fatigue caused by soccer matches, as well as to provide possible directions for future research. It is hoped that the introduction of this review article can provide soccer coaches and players with another strategy and application for reducing fatigue and accelerating the recovery of physical performance after soccer matches.
