Southern Anecdotes: Contextualizing Lin Jian-yun's Historical Writing in Her Disobedience

The influences of the February 28 Incident from the early postwar period of World War II on Taiwanese modern history were far-reaching. Additionally, it led to distinct differences in culture, politics and identity among the numerous ethnic groups. This incident even became an ideological resource for works of historical fiction. Writings based on historical memory could be affected by subjective political attitudes and expectations for the future. Therefore, how to write the past in the present for the future becomes an issue. This essay discusses the Disobedience in Lin Jian-yun's "Trilogy of Rebellion" and focuses on the "Southern Anecdotes" as a point of departure. The South becomes not only a geographical and spatial marker but also a method of viewing. Pingtung (the South) presents a different historical aspect of Taiwan in its topographical knowledge formation trajectory. If historical novels about the 228 Incident created their genealogy, why does Lin Jian-yun's Disobedience focus on southern families and historical memory? What kind of mental images did political trauma create in the minds of the Christian family? How did the Mainlanders who drifted to Taiwan decide to stay and live in Taiwan in the chaotic early postwar period? These discussions initiate the possibility of creating a genre of historical novels on the 228 Incident. Finally, this essay proposes that Lin Jian-yun's Disobedience writes from the perspective of local historical studies, then combs through the events of Pingtung and the 228 Incident from a Southern standpoint in Taiwan's transition to justice. Through the shaping and interpretation of the characters, the novel enriches the history of the South and local knowledge in the genealogy of the historical novel of the 228 Incident. Disobedience is not only related to the author's own identity and the local experiences but is also tainted with subjective emotional interpretations. These interpretations generate both the history and the intervention of a contemporary perspective.
