THE LEARNING EFFECTIVENESS AND MOTIVATION OF USING UBIQUITOUS LEARNING SYSTEM TO CULTURAL HERITAGE GUIDING

In the past few years, mobile technologies have been regarded as an important tool to advance the development of Ubiquitous Learning (U-learning) environments. Many researchers proposed a u-learning system, which uses context-aware technologies to provide intuitive ways for students to engage in learning activities according to their own situations and locations. They also proved the potential of using u-learning technologies in real-world environments. Thus, a context-aware u-learning system for a historic teaching course was proposed in this study. This system is able to guide students to visit the historic monuments of Dr. Mackay, and learn his historical allusions and stories through the use of mobile devices. This increases the students' study interest in the MacKay culture. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed system, an experiment has been conducted in eight museums regarding the MacKay culture for a university local culture course. A total of 85 students were randomly assigned to an experimental group learning with the proposed system and a control group learning with the traditional outdoor teaching method. The experimental results showed that the proposed system significantly improved the students' learning achievements and motivation, while also promoting their learning attention and confidence.
