知識分子的掙扎：丘世文《周日牀上》的思想和語言

Joseph Yau Sai Man (1951-1998) was a representative Hong Kong writer. There were traces of Hong Kong history in his childhood, education, and writing career. In addition, the language, genres, and themes of his literary works are unique and bring irreplaceable contributions to Cantonese writing and Hong Kong Literature. He received fundamental knowledge of Guoxue and classical Chinese literature in the 1950s and was fluent in English in colonial secondary education. French Philosophy, European literature, and Russian novels were his life-long interests. Yau was one of the locally born post WWII baby boomers. Starting from this generation, Hong Kong has been regarded as a home rather than a place of migration. As one of the founders of City Magazine, Yau's perspectives of language choice represented his subjective awareness as a Hong Kong writer. He proposed that written language should reflect the modern life of Hong Kong, and standard Chinese should not be the single written language for writing and publication. Although he had been an accountant for a very long period, this career had not affected his thoughts and pursuits as a humanistic intellectual. The most representative literary work of Yau, the novel Sunday in Bed, demonstrates his struggles as an intellectual. The deep and conflicting thoughts behind such struggles create tension against commercial society and should be invaluable resources of today's Hong Kong. Although his achievement as writer and his character are always remembered by the local academia, special research outputs of Yau remain few. The paper takes Sunday in Bed as a channel to introduce the life and thoughts of Yau, and evaluates his contributions in using ＂Two Languages and Three Scripts＂ as a written language.
