A Comparative Analysis of the Hans and the Aborigines' Perception of Yi-Lan Experiences in Lan-Yang Region

This research focuses on the population in Yi-Lan county and investigates the differences in the perceptions of Yi-Lan experiences between the Hans and the Aborigine s. The data from the 2006 Yi-Lan County Social Change and Sustainable Development Survey were used to conduct the analysis. The main findings are: First, compared to the Hans, Aboriginal people are significantly more likely to identify with Atayal culture. However, in terms of the broad concept of ”Yi-Lan experiences”, there is no significant difference between the Hans and the Aborigines. Second, both the Hans and the Aborigines appraise the Yi-Lan tourism industry highly. Third, political party affiliation affects the Yi-Lan identity. After controlling for ethnicities, respondents with the Democratic Party affiliations still think that democratic traditions are the Yi-Lan experiences to be proud of.
