The Filipino Chinese call themselves "Lán-lâng" (咱人, our people) and the words they speak are called "Lán-lâng-ōe" (咱人話, Philippine Hokkien), the only example of Minnan-speaking ethnic Chinese people in Southeast Asia to create new words in their native tongue. The year 1973 can be called the "First Year of the Filipino Chinese". After Marcus amended the Constitution in 1973, the "Chinese Immigrants" who had been "stateless" for more than 400 years changed their identity to become "Filipino Chinese", and "Philippine Hokkien" was repositioned with the change of ethnic identity. This paper will discuss the plight of Philippine Hokkien over the past century and Chinese identity and language status after the adoption of the 1973 Constitution. The author believes that Philippine Hokkien should be included in the Regulations for the Preservation of Special Languages as one of the minority languages in the Philippines, which is the most appropriate language status for Philippine Hokkien in the Philippines.
