UNDERSTANDING TOURISTS' MOTIVES TO VISIT BORNEO DEATH MARCH SITE: KUNDASANG WAR MEMORIAL DARK TOURISM

摘要

The term dark tourism is used when visitation to death and disaster sites is offered. The distinguished feature of dark tourism products is allowing the tourists to experience, being in a distressed site that is associated with death. The Borneo Death March incident is one of the infamous tragedies in Sabah, in which the victims are militaries from Australia and New Zealand, as well as local people. Up to now, there is limited research done to identify the tourists' motives for visiting dark tourism sites, particularly in Sabah. This study aims to find out the tourists' main motives for visiting the dark tourism site, by using Kundasang War Memorial as a case study, considering that it was the camping site for the prisoners of war (POWs) during the treacherous march from Sandakan. This research is based on data obtained from a survey questionnaire that polled the tourists' motives for visiting the dark tourism site. The data was analyzed to determine what motivates the tourists most in visiting Kundasang War Memorial, as well as their overall perceptions of the site. The results showed that there are four main motives: gaining new knowledge, remembrance of the fallen heroes, re-enactment of past event, and pilgrimage. The most dominant motive was to gain new knowledge, followed by the remembrance of the fallen heroes. It was also shown in the results that a holistic approach is vital for a successful site management. It is hoped that the results from this study can contribute to the improvement of site management in Kundasang War Memorial.
