The outbreak of the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease-2019) pandemic in 2020 has profoundly influenced learning worldwide. Taiwan maintained both in-person and remote online modes of learning by adopting the "Suspending class without suspending learning!" policy. Emergency online learning, during Taiwan's quasi-lockdown, differed from standard online learning and was unique to Taiwan. We analyzed this practice of emergency online learning using an online questionnaire administered from May to June 2020 to undergraduate and graduate students; 123 valid responses were analyzed. The results indicated that up to 87% of students felt positively about emergency online learning in terms of access to learning opportunities and quality of learning. Undergraduates students perceived more positively than graduates did. However, male and female respondents did not significantly differ with respect to online learning acceptance, social presence, teaching presence, and perception of online learning. Additionally, the qualitative results highlighted the advantages of emergency online learning, suggestions for improvement, considerations and specific measures for future implementations of emergency online learning.
