The Last Strike: Chang Jun-Mai and the Third Force Movement in Hong Kong in the 1950s

The Third Force Movement in Hong Kong in the 1950s was basically regarded as a part of the Cold War structure of the United States and the Soviet Union. It was supported by the anti-Chiang power of Li Zong-ren and the United States. Therefore, there were complicated domestic and foreign factors. With the financial support of the United States, they set up the most representative and powerful "China Democratic League" (hereinafter referred to as CDL). In the past, the CDL leadership had the so-called "three Changs and one Gu", with Chang Fa-kui, Chang Jun-mai, Chang Guo-tao and Gu Meng-yu as the four giants. The background was divided into the Kuomintang, the China Democratic Socialist Party, the Communist Party, and the former "reorganization group" of Wang Jing-wei. These four people were famous in the history of the Republic of China. In spite of their noble character, it was destined to end in tragic failure during the turbulent political situation of the Republic of China. Chang Fa-kui's refusal to return to the mainland and Taiwan, Chang Guo-tao was suffered from poverty and illnesses and eventually died in Canada, and Gu Meng-yu left for the United States and reluctantly returned to Taiwan in his later years, Chang Jun-mai endured the hardships of giving lectures overseas and eventually died in San Francisco. Since they were homesick, why not return to their hometowns? They would rather live and die in a foreign country. To some extent, that was the most sorrowful protests they could do to disapprove the autocratic dictatorship of the KMT and the Communist parties. Although the incident has taken place for a long time, they adhere to the principles of democracy and freedom. In addition to their integrity, they set plenty of examples for us to learn. This research focuses on Chang Jun-mai, discusses the propositions of the third force, and the beginning and end of the Hong Kong Third Force Movement.
