As the elderly population continues to rise, the burden of caring for the elderly rises commensurately, and elder mistreatment events have becoming more common. Elder neglect is the most common type of these mistreatments. Although many literatures have defined elder neglect as a type of abuse of the elderly, it is believed that elder neglect conceptually differs from elder abuse. The purpose of this article is to apply the Walker and Avant concept analysis steps, which includes analyzing the concept of elder neglect and determining the defining attributes of elder neglect at different levels, identifying the antecedents and consequences of elder neglect, listing the model, borderline and related cases of elder neglect, and describing the clinical measurements and practical applications. The results of this analysis can be referenced for health professionals to detect elder neglect early, and provide assistance in a timely manner, in order to maintain the safety of the elderly and their dignity in old age.
