Low Risk Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor With High FDG Metabolism

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal tumor of the alimentary canal. However, calcification and intense fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in low risk GIST of patient is rare. A 50-year-old woman received FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for tumor survey. FDG PET/CT showed a nodule with heterogeneously increased FDG uptake in the small intestine with a focal hot spot within the nodule and a peripheral calcified spot on CT. Five years and 7 months later, the nodule and calcified spot enlarged with more intense FDG uptake. Hence, the patient received small intestine resection. Pathologic reports revealed small intestine stromal cell tumor (GIST) with low risk of malignancy.
