It is a positive and concrete action for green sustainability that transforming the negative impact of carbon dioxide on the human living environment into useful raw materials. The coupling of carbon dioxide and epoxides could produce cyclic carbonates and polycarbonates, which are high-value materials. One of the most common technologies applied in the coupling reaction is the employment of metal catalysts due to their ability to increase the production efficiency and control the properties of the resulting product. The metal complex hybrid materials combine the advantages of both traditional homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, the description of this hybrid type of catalysts will be displayed based on the classification of the supports of the metal complexes, including silica, carbon materials, magnetic nanoparticles, and organic polymers. The recyclability of the catalysts will also be emphasized. Moreover, through the case study of the application of the hybrid catalysts toward the coupling reaction, the factors that might affect the catalytic performance will be presented.
