Inquiry and Practice of Interdisciplinary Learning: Detect the Nitrogen Dioxide Emitted by Motorcycles Using the Home-made Photometer

In this study, a simple photometer was made and used to measure nitrogen dioxide for outdoor applications. The knowledge and skills taught in the Living Technology and Arts and Life classes, simple semiconductor electronic components, multimedia drawing, and 3D printing were used to build a simple photometer. The Griess reaction, p-aminobenzenesulfonic acid and N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride reacting with nitrite under acidic conditions, was used to detect NO_2 in the air emitted by motorcycles. The Griess reagent was also modified which phosphoric acid was replaced with oxalic acid, and the modified reagent was turned into a mixed powder, providing greater safety and portability. The homemade photometer, with a green LED light (wavelength 520-530 nm), can be used at anytime and anywhere outdoors. This study provides a tool and guidance for high school students to explore and practice their concern for sustainable environmental issues.
