Repentance is a Chinese Buddhist tradition and a means through which Buddhism is connected to local folk customs. However, after the Ming Dynasty, many Buddhist repentance malpractices have emerged; the commercialization of Buddhist teachings has undermined its pricelessness and its concept of service. The Buddhist Repentance Ceremony has caused harm to the characteristics and qualities of the Buddhist monastics, at the same time, causing misunderstandings that Buddhism is a religion for the dead. Venerable Master Hsing Yun thinks that the Buddhist Repentance Ceremony was an invisible Dharma crisis that has caused serious criticisms. At the same time, Venerable Master believes there is a place for Buddhist Repentance in Humanistic Buddhism, that it has auspicious merits, and has greatly expanded on the methods and contents of Buddhist Repentance.
