Taichu Middle School Establishing Campaign initiated by Lîm Liat-tông (林烈堂) and Lîm Hiàn-tông (林獻堂) between 1912 and 1915 is often regarded as the beginning of the political and social movements in Japanese Taiwan. In contrast, there has been less discussion of the campaign itself and the donors. Therefore, this study aims to respond to the following questions: First, who were the donors? What were the interpersonal networks on which the campaign is based? How is the campaign related to the subsequent political and social movements? This study makes extensive use of the Iû^n Tiāu-ka (楊肇嘉) collections at the Institute of Taiwan History Archives, Academia Sinica. Adopting prosopographical and GIS methods, this study analyzed the social and geographical composition of the donors. Then through social network analysis, this study observed the interpersonal network among donors and the relationships between political and social organizations. The case study sheds new light on the research of local elites in Japanese Taiwan.
