The Jesuit Image of East Asian Buddhism in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries

摘要


在天主教與佛教的初次相遇中,天主教傳教士在理解佛教時遇到了巨大的困難:雖然佛教的宗教儀式與天主教很相似,但是其教義似乎拒斥一切真理。為了理解佛教的兩面,日本耶穌會士建立了佛教雙重教義論。在中國和越南,耶穌會士根據當地的情況,不斷調整和發展了雙重教義論。

When Catholic missionaries first encountered Buddhism, they faced a great difficulty in understanding it: though religious rituals were quite similar, the Buddhist teachings seemed to reject any truth. In order to understand those two aspects of Buddhism, Jesuits in Japan established the theory of the double-teaching in Buddhism. According to the situations in China and Japan, Jesuits continued to adapt and develop the theory.
