NEW ENGLISH VERSION OF THE PEONY PAVILION WITH A "SHAKESPEARE'S FLAVOR"

摘要

Professor Bikang Huang's English version of The Peony Pavilion was published in September, 2021. In order to bridge culture gap between Chinese and English culture, the translator translates the book by using Shakespeare's language pattern. The ancient Chinese classic, The Peony Pavilion belongs to text with "high density meanings" for ancient Chinese contains a lot of hidden meanings in relatively few words. When it is translated into English, it is changed into a language with "low density meanings". Therefore, the translation involves lots of processing. The translator adopts a strategy to "go out to sea by other's boat", that is, he uses Shakespeare's language which is at the centre of English classics. Shakespeare's works are accepted all over the world, which confirms the charm of his language. His language is full of vivid images and expressions. The language pattern ensures the readers' reception to get the passport to the western world.
