Professional Narratives: Teaching practice of integrating undergraduate professional fields into the Freshmen Chinese Literature course

This course "Chinese Literature (Reading and Writing)" is a 4-credit compulsory general education course in National Pingtung University of Science and Technology. The course is also nicknamed "Freshman Chinese Literature." Generally, "Freshman Chinese Literature" courses involve unified curricular guidelines of the associated university and articles and textbooks that demonstrate university-specific characteristics. However, the students of the university come from various professional fields. Whether the Chinese literature course can be more closely linked to students' specialties and help students associate literature description and understanding with their professional observation and experience is a question worthy of exploration. Hence, a course entitled Professional Narratives" has been developed. In terms of instructional design, this course combines problem-based learning and online collaborative learning. Through 4-6 weeks of curricular arrangement and postcourse data collection and sharing in a discussion forum "professional" was used as the core concept to explore occupations of their professional fields, reports of relevant outstanding personnel, and professional operations tools and space. From near to far, and from large scale to small scale, data were collected and shared. Lectures and post sharing in the discussion forum were adopted to perform in-class ad online text analysis of possible forms that integrate literature and various professional fields (e.g., new poetry, prose, novel, movie, and drama). Finally, students were asked to write about "professional narratives" and submit them in forms of concrete poems or proses. After the students submit their works, they share and discuss the works in the discussion forum. This course integrates PBL and online collaborative learning into Chinese literature teaching. After the course model is established, the model is promoted to across the university. After implementing the model across the university, outstanding professional narrative works from the students are collected and published in NPUST Professional Journal for promotion. The outcomes can also serve as crucial references for continuous promotion and enhancement of future professional narrative courses.
