In 2015 United Nations Member States adopted the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, which set out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve a better and sustainable future by 2030. Trade as an engine of development is essentially important, in particular, Free Trade Agreement as a prominent feature providing opportunities for aligning international objectives on the 2030 sustainable development agenda. The main discussion of this study will elaborate on the nexus of sustainable development and free trade agreements. Sustainable development is known for its economic development, social inclusion, and environmental protection in achieving its aims. While the Free Trade Agreement is a feature in international trade that offers prominent advantages in achieving the direction that is included in the agreements. The sustainable development chapter on the Free Trade Agreement includes developed and relatively detailed chapters almost as a matter of fact. They can be ambitious and closely linked to international standards. However, issues of implementation and enforcement of their provisions raise many questions. In fact, Free Trade Agreement plays an important part that could be both positive and negative in terms of achieving the 2020 goals. Sustainable development provision in Free Trade Agreement shows completely the commitment of the international trade on achieving sustainable development. Yet, the performances of FTAs in achieving sustainable development objectives vary since they depend on the parties’ interests. By far, the most comment on the implementation is in terms of enforceability. A notable difference is how disputes settlement processes in sustainable development are enforced.
