A Study on Bookcrossing Promotion and Participants’ Experience

The purpose of this research aims to discuss the following: the current states, difficulties, and planning of bookcrossing, and bookcrossers’ participants’ experience. To that end, this adopts the in-depth semi-structured interview method. The interviewees include a staff member of New Taipei City Library and a staff member of Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MOTC) who has taken part in the promotion of bookcrossing as well as six bookcrossers who have joined the activity and read the books themselves. Through their experiences, we hope to dig deeper into the situation of bookcrossing. The research found several problems regarding bookcrossing. Firstly, there is a shortage on book resources and books unrelated to the selected themes are received. Secondly, the bookcrossing label itself is too easily to be shed off and rip off. Moreover, the function of those labels are not obvious, not to mention the information those labels provide are insufficient. Thirdly, everyone should have easy access to the physical location of the bookcrossing station which is why a virtual station is considered. Last but not least, there are limited funds provided so the activity are held irregularly through business promotion. Public misunderstanding of bookcrossing is also a nail in the coffin of the promotion of bookcrossing. Based on the results of this research, this research suggests to: Manage the shortage of books. The organization could collaborate with convenience stores and supermarkets to increase the quantity of books. The return rate of books can also be advocated towards bookcrossers. As for the selection of books, the organization needs to establish a set of clear standards. Concerning the poor adherence of the labels, the organization may consider putting stamps on the books. To ensure the function of the labels, the bookcrossing organization could adopt methods used by other bookcrossing organizations around the world. In order to get enough budget to provide a sufficient quantity of the labels, an organization is suggested to use related budget or hold a fundraising event. The organization may also consider collaborating with the MRT to improve access to the labels. Regarding the physical locations of the bookcrossing stations, more should be set up in metro stations, department stores, convenience stores, supermarkets, etc. The organization may also refer to BookCrossing in the U.S. and iReading in Taiwan when launching a virtual station. In the matter of the promotion of bookcrossing activities, it is advised to bring in government resources or public and company donations. Promotion should also be targeted towards different age groups and different ethnic groups. The publicity of the activity can also be strengthened by using an exclusive slogan for bookcrossing. As for the concept of bookcrossing among the people, an organization is suggested to recruit volunteers to help promote the concept of bookcrossing and use digital media to promote it (E.g. official website, FB, LINE).
