Social media has great influence on modern society in many aspects. A lot of us use social media to interact with others, entertain, and learn new knowledge. There is abundant information and stimulations on the Internet. This study is set out to understand the motivation, behavior, perceptions, and influence of social media on upper-grade students in the primary school. Forty-eight upper graders were invited to be the participants in focus groups. Qualitative data was collected and analyzed after rounds of focus group interviews. The results of the study identify the followings. For the motivation of using social media for upper graders, the environment of the children was the main cause. That is, family relatives and school peers could easily influence children on using social media. There was also an indication that social media was already a large portion of their lives. Regarding the aspects of influence, results of the study showed that social media had both positive and negative influence on students. On the positive side, relationships were built and connections were strengthened through the use of social media. Also, students reported that they gained a lot of knowledge through social media. On the other hand, there was also some negative influence, such as reduction of sleeping hours, increased shortsightedness, cyber addiction, etc. The results revealed that students felt pleased and had a sense of accomplishment, as well as self-worthiness while using social media. The study suggests that teachers are advised to take advantage of new technology and electronic devices while building up needed discipline during the course of giving instructions in class. Parents should pay extra attention to how children behave when they are on the Internet, be aware of the places they have visited, and consider carefully the timing for giving out smart phones, in order to make good use of social media. The findings of the study could serve as a guide for future researchers who are interested in studying the use of social media for our next generation.
