Effects of Minor Scandium on the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Zr-Cu-Al-Ni Amorphous Alloys

The 3mm diameter alloy rods of (Zr50Cu35Ni6Al9)100-XScX(X=0, 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1at.%) were produced by injection casting method. In the rods where Sc addition were 0.02 and 1 at.%, their XRD spectra consisted of only broad diffraction peaks without any sharp Bragg peaks, indicating they are amorphous in structure. For the rods of X=0,0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 at.%, their XRD spectra showed characteristic Bragg peaks on top of the broad diffraction peaks meaning that they were glassy matrix composites. The 1 at.% Sc containing rod had ΔTx as high as 105 K showing its excellent glass forming ability. Among all alloys investigated, the alloy rods of X=0.02 and 1 at.% gave rise to the highest microhardness of 575 and 580 Hv respectively. Their uniaxial compressive strengths were also the highest and reached 1750MPa and 1800MPa respectively. The vein-like fracture characteristics were found to dominate the fracture surfaces of all uniaxial compressive test specimens. However, in the regions nearby these vein-like fractures, typical brittle river patterns were also observed.
